Digital currency, also known as cryptocurrency, emerged in 2009. It operates on a blockchain network that protects transactions, their information, and the data of those who transact.
It’s called this because it only exists online, unlike the real, the dollar, and other currencies that can be touched. In other words, you know they’re real, but you can’t hold them in your hands—or store them in your wallet, safe, or anywhere else.
Below, check out 10 things people don’t know about digital currency:
#1 – What is blockchain?
Basically, blockchain is a system that allows certain types of information to be sent and received over the internet.
They are pieces of code generated online that carry connected information, like blocks of data forming a chain. Hence the name “blockchain.”
And in cryptographic systems because it is this layer of security, guaranteed by the blockchain, that enables the issuance and transaction of virtual currencies in a more secure way – when done correctly.
It is from this technology, in fact, that the name cryptocurrency – encrypted currency – comes.
#2 – How did digital currency come about?
The origins of digital currency come from cyberpunks, a group of individuals with a countercultural vision of society. They believe in a world free from imposed standards, with complete freedom and far from excessive government control.
Cyberpunks have a vision close to anarchism, defending inalienable privacy. They also master futuristic technological systems and tools.
After bitgold and b-money, cryptocurrencies that never came to be used, Satoshi Nakamoto (pseudonym of an individual or group of individuals) developed the basic concept of bitcoin and launched it.
Since then, cryptocurrency has gained traction, especially after 2013, when taxpayers in the Republic of Cyprus had their savings confiscated and had to look for alternatives outside of traditional banks.
#3 – Digital currency and pizza: where do they meet?
May 22nd marks a milestone for the cryptocurrency and blockchain communities. Ten years ago, Bitcoin was first used in a transaction to purchase a product.
One cryptocurrency user was Laszlo Hanyecz, who paid 10,000 bitcoins for two large pizzas. And thus, “Bitcoin Pizza Day” was born.
#4 – What are the main digital currencies?
In recent years, several virtual currencies have emerged – there are already more than 2,000 available – but the main ones , by market value, are:
- Bitcoin;
- Ethereum;
- Ripple;
- Litecoin;
- Bitcoin Cash;
- EOS;
- Binance Coin.
#5 – How private keys work
One of Bitcoin’s greatest advantages is the security provided by the blockchain network. The fact that it operates in a decentralized manner with hundreds of nodes around the world is the disruptive element of this cryptocurrency.
However, the asymmetric encryption scheme has a drawback. Each cryptocurrency wallet has two keys . Of course, the private key is unique and should never be shared under any circumstances.
In other words, let’s say your computer’s hard drive completely crashes and you lose access to your wallet. If you don’t have any backup of your private keys, you won’t be able to access your funds again, and those bitcoins will remain forever in encrypted limbo.
Therefore, many choose to use online wallets or directly on exchanges, while more advanced wallets use recovery mechanisms such as seeds.
#6 – Advantages of digital currencies
Among its main advantages are:
Lower risk of fraud and theft;
Privacy and freedom for financial transactions;
Less bureaucracy and access for anyone connected to the internet;
Its value is not influenced by inflation in each country;
It is a universal currency, that is, it does not belong to any specific nation;
More and more technology companies, such as WordPress and SoundCloud, as well as giants like Microsoft and IBM, are now accepting digital currency as payment.
#7 – The risks of investing in digital currency
1 – Financial bubble
Many economists disagree about the use and overvaluation of virtual currencies.
Indeed, some investors fear that this rapid growth of the currency could create a financial bubble that, if it bursts, would leave many investors in a bad position.
2- Ban on currency in some countries
Not all countries recognize Bitcoin transactions, which makes this investment somewhat risky.
The Russian government, for example, is on the list of countries that have banned any type of commercial transaction using virtual currencies.
3 – Lack of regulation
In Pak, as in many other countries, there are no rules regulating the use of virtual currencies.
This is because the Pak government doesn’t believe in the power of virtual currency. On the contrary, authorities believe it’s nothing more than a fad and could become a serious financial problem.
The fact that virtual currency is not officially recognized by any other government makes the situation even more complicated.
#8 – How to buy digital currency
Buying digital currencies is simple: just open an account with a brokerage and start trading.
But first and foremost, it’s essential to research the companies available on the market, check customer reviews, and understand the fees charged.
#9 – Cryptocurrencies through mining
As the best-known of all cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin rewards the owners of the computers that participated in solving these mathematical problems with fractions of the currency.
To be part of those who solve these calculations, it is necessary to invest in good machinery to mine bitcoins.
However, the initial investment is not always worth it, as, due to their specificity, computers suitable for the process tend to have a high market value.
They also consume a lot of electricity, spending hours or even days mining, which substantially increases the electricity bill.
Because computers are left on for long hours and days to mine, they require specialized and very powerful cooling systems. Otherwise, they can overheat, melt, short-circuit, and even cause fires.
For this reason, mining machines require cooling systems. However, these are expensive and require more physical space.
For these reasons, setting up a bitcoin mining company is an investment that should be carefully considered, as it is expensive and can reduce the profits obtained.
#10 – Hashrate, computational power
Each digital currency has its own network security characteristics.
To get an idea of the computing power behind the Bitcoin network, the estimated energy expenditure of miners is currently higher than the energy consumption of a country like Chile.
Many question the need for such a large expenditure. However, we must remember that the network is securing thousands of addresses and transactions.
